She was diagnosed last January at age 59, but had noticeable symptoms since late 2022. She unfortunately passed away this February at just 60 years old.

When my mum’s dementia journey began and ended, I was just in my early 20s. My experience supporting my mum was very difficult, it was really hard to see her declining, slowly losing abilities she had before, and feeling depressed. It was a lonely experience personally, and as a family. It was almost impossible to get age-appropriate care when my mum’s symptoms progressed, it was hard for all of us to get the support we needed.

Mum softened emotionally after her symptoms began in late 2022. When I asked my parents for a cat in 2024, she was fully supportive of me which I really appreciated. We went on holiday to Paris as a family last summer, it was lovely to enjoy that time with Mum and see her enjoying herself.

I was struggling to find support as a daughter in her 20s with a parent dealing with dementia as most resources I found were helping children under 18 or helping people in their 40s+ deal with their partner or parent with dementia. I had a meeting with a Dementia UK Admiral Nurse (who was a huge help throughout our journey as a family), and she recommended Lorenzo’s House to me. After my first contact and video call with them, I felt I’d finally found what I was looking for all along!

I’ve felt so supported by everyone at Lorenzo’s House since I joined them, it’s a family that I’m very glad I’m a part of and will continue to be a part of to help others in a similar situation!

Thanks to Georgia for sharing her experience and to Lorenzo’s House for telling us about what they do.
