We’ve talked about the project in previous blog posts, and it was lovely to be able to bring together people from a range of different backgrounds and different parts of the country to share our findings and tell them all about the resources we’ve developed. Some were involved in the project and kindly welcomed the team into their groups to carry out data collection activities, while others were new and hearing about it for the first time.

After a welcome from Dr Shirley Evans and overview of the project from Thomas Morton, the group got to do some introductions and find out where everyone had come from and what their particular interest was in the project. The session started by watching a introductory video about the project (which you can find on the Food Glorious Food website), before the group was given a brief description of the community groups who were involved in the project.

Thomas then took the group through the main findings from the project, discussing both the positive outcomes and some of the barriers people may encounter around food, as well as taking cultural issues into consideration. The main areas related to:

Providing hot food

Providing culturally appropriate food

Providing refreshments/snacks

Asking people to bring a meal (e.g. a packed lunch)

Bringing food to share

Managing dietary and support needs

Creating supportive routines and a supportive environment

Routines and environment supportive of cultural identity

Involving people in food practices

Using food in other activities (e.g. discussion, reminiscence, quizzes, outings)

In addition to the main findings the project explored people’s experiences of food within their own homes, and identified specific challenges that people and families affected by dementia may face.

The session opened up to give attendees a chance to share their thoughts and feedback, especially those from groups who had been involved in the project who provided additional insights into the challenges they face around taking various dietary requirements and preferences into account when meal planning.

Following a short break (where refreshments were provided, obviously) where lots of useful discussions took place, we came back together as a group to look at the resources developed from the project. First off, we took a look at the new Food Glorious Food website which brings together all of the findings in one place. You can access the information that was discussed during this launch event, links to download the booklet in four languages, links to recipes that have been shared with us, and links to useful resources around food and drink.

We then moved on to look at the booklet in more detail, giving attendees the opportunity to have a read through and share their initial feedback. There was a feeling within the group that the project findings will be useful to help people understand the amount of work involved in organising and including food in community groups, as well as the funding and staffing levels to do it safely and in compliance with hygiene regulations. The need to balance safety and risk with the potential benefits was also discussed, with a feeling that it can be taken too far and take away people’s autonomy and enjoyment. We also had some great discussions among the group with people sharing their own stories and experiences around food. The overriding feeling was that food is very personal and is closely linked to identity, and there is no one solution that will suit or work for everyone, so getting to know people as individuals – and appreciating how they may change over time – is key.

The final topic was thinking about what could be done next to take the work forward. What aspects could be looked at further? What should be our priorities for a future research project? Some great ideas were shared within the group and definitely gave us food for thought (no pun intended).

Throughout the morning the presentations featured many photos and images from the project of food, which left everyone feeling rather peckish. It was a good job that the event concluded with a lovely lunch – it would be rude to host an event about food without providing lunch!

<figure
